Tyndall Air Force Base Lodging Facilities
Rebuilding Air Force Base Lodging After Hurricane Michael

When Hurricane Michael devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast in 2018, it destroyed much of Tyndall Air Force Base and set in motion a
once-in-a-generation rebuild. As part of that effort, the base modernized its lodging and guest facilities to expand capacity, improve
quality of life for airmen and families, and support its role as the Air Force’s “Installation of the Future.” The upgraded accommodations
provide comfort and functionality for personnel participating in training exercises and activities hosted at the installation.

IntegralRSG and structural engineer Meyer Borgman Johnson (MBJ) merged progressive collapse expertise with practical design. We partnered with expFederal to confront UFC 4-023-03 requirements for this Risk Category IV facility. Our team led cost-benefit analyses comparing proprietary systems with custom-engineered alternatives. Ultimately we identified solutions that balanced resilience with cost-efficiency while reducing reliance on moment connections for the steel-framed gravity force-resisting system. Leveraging an analytical toolbox, purpose-built for structural integrity and resilience applications, we advanced Alternate Path, Tie Force, and Enhanced Local Resistance strategies, ensuring compliance while optimizing constructability.
Collaborating closely with the engineer of record, builder, and steel fabricator, IntegralRSG and MBJ translated complex performance
requirements into detailing strategies suitable for bid packages and final construction documents. The result is a facility designed for
durability and mission readiness—supporting today’s airmen while strengthening the installation for the challenges of tomorrow.
