Protective Design for LA Olympics & Mega Events
The LAX/Metro Transit Center: Securing LA for the World Cup, Super Bowl, and 2028 Olympics

The LAX/Metro Transit Center
Station
is Metro’s first station bringing rail service directly to the LAX area. As part of Metro’s “Twenty-Eight by ’28” initiative, the new $900
million station unites rail, bus, bicycle, and pedestrian access to reduce car dependency and prepare Los Angeles for global events
including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Super
Bowl LXI,
and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic
Games.
Designed as a gateway for millions of travelers, it is a cornerstone of the city’s commitment to more sustainable and accessible
public transportation.
For IntegralRSG, this project underscores how protective design safeguards critical infrastructure while enabling mobility. Brought on as
subject matter experts, we guided LA Metro through a complex challenge: aligning pedestrian safety intentions with site conflicts that
constrained the feasibility of preferred design solutions. We defined a framework within which a custom-engineered solution could be
accepted by Metro. We also independently reviewed fabrication drawings and engineering documentation to verify a construction outcome
aligned with performance objectives.
The result: a transit hub that enhances mobility, reinforces safety and resilience, and supports a more connected Los Angeles.

Automated People Mover: Protective Design Redefines LAX Passenger Journey

Stretching over two miles through the heart of LAX, the new Automated
People Mover
is the centerpiece of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA)’s Landside Access
Modernization Program. It is also the aviation authority’s first public-private partnership. With five new stations linking to the
Consolidated Rental Car facility, intermodal transportation hubs, expanded airport parking, and Metro transit, the Automated People Mover
transforms how millions of travelers access one of the world’s busiest airports. Beyond easing congestion, this project delivers lasting
value through local job creation, workforce development, and a stronger, closer-knit Los Angeles.
IntegralRSG served as the protective design discipline lead for the Threat & Vulnerability Assessment, guiding LAWA through a comprehensive security risk management strategy. Our team consolidated a program of design enhancements as part of Early Works efforts and provided support through design and construction to implement and document alignment with LAWA’s expectations. We advanced engineered solutions to harden stations, fixed facilities, and the elevated guideway against high-intensity shock, impact, and thermal loading—embedding resilience into the core of LA’s revitalized airport experience.
By safeguarding critical infrastructure while enabling seamless mobility, the Automated People Mover positions Los Angeles to welcome the world during the he 2026 FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl LXI, and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
